On any given day, you may find officers from Huntington Police Department, Huntington County Sheriff’s Department and the Indiana State Police walking through the halls or chatting with students during passing periods or at lunch.  Our School Resource Officer, Ben Whitman, knows that building relationships with students benefits everyone.  “Being a former student and graduate of Huntington North High School, the biggest way I can relate to students is by letting them know that not long ago I was in their shoes.  I was facing the same everyday experiences and struggles that they are currently going through today.   If there is anything that these kids take away from me being in their schools, I hope that it is a positive experience with law enforcement.  Unfortunately, some of our students don’t always have those positive experiences with law enforcement once they are out of school.  If I can show students that they can trust law enforcement and make it known that we are here for them, then I have done my job.”

“We are so grateful for our officers that serve our schools and students throughout the corporation.  Many strive to build relationships with kids and go out of their way to assist them in many ways.  One example of this is lunch time trivia in which Officer Double goes around and asks students questions for a chance to win candy.  Officer Whitman has also been in several classrooms as he answers questions students have about going into law enforcement as a career.  Students know and trust our officers and share many things with them as they seek to get assistance from them,” stated School Safety Specialist Jami Craft.

Fostering the relationship between our students and law enforcement officers benefits both parties.  Students are familiar with the officers that they see on a regular basis and have a healthy respect for what they are doing to keep everyone safe.
