2020 HNHS Graduation Information

Cap and Gown Delivery Information

Graduating Seniors and Families:

Congratulations on your amazing accomplishments in incredibly difficult circumstances!  I am sorry that we can’t give you the graduation you may have envisioned.  While we won’t be having the traditional graduation at HNHS, we are excited to reveal the following plans which have been made to take into account as many of your requests as we can accommodate.

As we have gone through the planning process, we have sought and received input from many of our graduates, their families, community members, and the local board of health.  We have heard of your desires and concerns, we have made every effort to adhere to your wishes.

In gathering this input and in my conversations with many of you, the two main “wants” that I heard were the chance to have family witness the graduation, and graduates want to walk across a stage to receive their diplomas.

Thank you to the people who have worked tirelessly on this continually changing and evolving plan, and thank you to all who have given us feedback and ideas in creating this unprecedented event, including the Huntington County Board of Health.

 Graduation 2020 Plan:

Date/Time of Graduation: We will be conducting graduation over the course of Friday, May 29, and Saturday, May 30th.  This was done to adhere to the majority of stakeholders who wished to have graduation as close to the original date as possible.

Friday evening beginning at 6 PM we will have our Valedictorian/Salutatorians, class officers, and top 25 students graduate.  This is so our student speakers can have their speeches recorded, and also will allow us to work through a small group and make any needed adjustments for the remainder of our graduates the next day.

Saturday we will be graduating students beginning at 9 AM and lasting until approximately 6 PM.  We will have groups of 15 students graduate every half hour.

Students and families will be notified of the particular time of graduation and when they need to arrive upon the delivery by HNHS administration and staff of the graduate’s cap and gown.  Deliveries will be made May 19, 20, and 21st, and graduates will be notified of an approximate time of delivery.  This information will also be posted on The Class of 2020 Canvas Page and on School Messenger.

Graduation attendants: State government, Indiana Department of Education, and local board of health guidelines require us to keep the number of people inside of our building to fewer than 100 at any one time.  In order to accommodate this requirement, the graduate may choose any four people to go inside with them to view the ceremony.  Please note that infants and toddlers, even if carried by an adult, count as one of the four people in the graduate party.  All of the routes that parties will be traveling are handicapped accessible.  Because of the board of health considerations, there will be no restrooms available for use and be prepared for adhering to social distancing even if you live with those people, and arrived in the same vehicle.

Graduation Procedure: Graduates and their group of people need to enter the school together. Parking will be in the athletic parking area east of HNHS.  Groups will enter Door 26, the large garage type door on the east side of the HNHS fieldhouse.  Once inside the fieldhouse, you and your group will be met by HNHS staff and given further instructions.

Graduates and their parties will be arranged in alphabetical order with the assistance of HNHS staff.  The groups will then move towards the gymnasium area.

As students approach the gym, the graduate will get in line to walk across the stage, and the graduate’s party will be moved into the gym in front of the graduation stage; at this time, the party can get cameras and video recorders ready.  (Note: the people watching the graduate will be standing; there will not be chairs available.)  At that time, the graduate will enter the gym and cross the stage as their name is being announced.  The graduate will receive their diploma folder at that time.  After they cross the stage, graduates will rejoin their party and move to the end of the gym where graduates will receive their diplomas.  As students exit, they will return sashes, cords, or any other items.

Graduates and parties will then exit out of HNHS Door #20 and can walk back to the parking lot.

Graduation will be live-streamed on the HCCSC website, and when the ceremony is edited, it will be posted on both the HNHS website and YouTube.  The ceremony will also be carried live on HNHS radio station 91.9 FM.

If you cannot make the graduation ceremony, please email me at rgilg@hccsc.k12.in.us to let me know.  In that case, you will be able to make arrangements to pick up your diploma at HNHS at another time.

*Please be aware that while we do not expect any changes, but should board of health guidelines change between now and these dates, these plans may be adjusted due to those changes.

Thank you in advance for your understanding and patience as we conduct this graduation for the first time; let’s make it a great day for the HNHS Class of 2020!

 Sincerely,

 Rief A. Gilg
